What is Vertigo?
Vertigo is a sensation of spinning, dizziness, or feeling that you or your surroundings are moving when there is no actual movement. It is usually caused by problems involving the inner ear or the parts of the brain responsible for balance and spatial orientation.
Vertigo can occur suddenly or gradually and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, imbalance, blurred vision, or difficulty walking. One of the most common causes is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which occurs when tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear become displaced.
पर फिजियोथेरेपी Expert, we manage Vertigo through vestibular rehabilitation, balance training, positional assessment, gaze stabilization exercises, and individualized movement strategies to reduce dizziness and improve balance and confidence during daily activities.
शर्त को समझना
Vertigo occurs when there is a mismatch between information received from the inner ear, eyes, and sensory systems responsible for maintaining balance.
- Vestibular system of the inner ear
- Balance and spatial orientation
- Walking and postural stability
It is commonly associated with disorders of the inner ear, although some forms of Vertigo may originate from the central nervous system.
People with Vertigo may experience a spinning sensation when turning their head, changing position, standing, or walking.
Types of Vertigo
Vertigo can present in different forms:
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
- Most common peripheral cause of Vertigo
- Triggered by specific head movements
Vestibular Neuritis
- Inflammation affecting the vestibular nerve
- Can cause sudden and intense Vertigo
Labyrinthitis
- May cause Vertigo and hearing-related symptoms
- Inflammation affecting the inner ear
Central Vertigo
- Originates from the brain or central nervous system
- Requires appropriate medical evaluation
गंभीरता और कार्यात्मक प्रभाव को समझना
गंभीरता हल्के से गंभीर रूप से बदलती है:
- हल्के: Brief dizziness during specific head movements with minimal impact on daily activities.
- मध्यम: Recurrent Vertigo, nausea, imbalance, and difficulty walking or performing normal activities.
- गंभीर: Persistent dizziness, significant balance problems, difficulty walking, and increased risk of falls.
Early assessment and appropriate treatment can help reduce symptoms and improve functional independence.
Common Causes of Vertigo
Vertigo can have several underlying causes.
Inner Ear Disorders
– BPPV
– Vestibular neuritis
Head Movement and Positional Changes
– Rolling over in bed
– Looking upward or downward
Neurological Conditions
– Migraine-associated Vertigo
– स्ट्रोक
Other Contributing Factors
– Head or neck injury
– Certain medications

निदान: नैदानिक दृष्टिकोण
At Physiotherapy Expert, assessment involves a comprehensive vestibular and functional evaluation:
- नैदानिक परीक्षा: Assessment of dizziness, symptoms, posture, balance, and movement patterns.
- Positional Assessment: Specific positional tests may be performed to identify BPPV and determine the affected side.
- Vestibular Assessment: Evaluation of eye movements, gaze stability, head movement tolerance, and vestibular function.
- कार्यात्मक आकलन: Assessment of walking, balance, transfers, and activities that trigger dizziness.
Early assessment helps identify the likely cause and determine the appropriate rehabilitation approach.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न
Can Vertigo be cured?
The outlook depends on the underlying cause. Many common causes, including BPPV, can be effectively treated, while other conditions may require ongoing management.
Can physiotherapy help with Vertigo?
Yes. Vestibular physiotherapy can help reduce dizziness, improve balance, retrain the vestibular system, and restore confidence during movement.
How long does Vertigo treatment take?
Recovery varies according to the cause and severity. Some positional forms may improve after a small number of treatment sessions, while vestibular rehabilitation may require several weeks.
Can Vertigo come back after treatment?
Yes. Some types of Vertigo, particularly BPPV, can recur. Learning appropriate exercises and management strategies can help patients respond to future episodes.
