sciatica

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain that follows the path of the sciatic nerve, which travels from the lower back through the buttock and down the back of the leg. It usually occurs when a nerve root in the lower spine becomes irritated, compressed, or inflamed.

Sciatica commonly causes pain on one side of the body and may also produce numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected leg. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that interferes with walking, sitting, sleeping, and everyday activities.

पर फिजियोथेरेपी Expert, we manage Sciatica through individualized physiotherapy, movement-based rehabilitation, posture correction, manual therapy, and progressive strengthening exercises to reduce pain, improve mobility, and restore functional independence.

शर्त को समझना

Sciatica occurs when one or more nerve roots that contribute to the sciatic nerve are irritated or compressed, most commonly in the lower lumbar spine.

It is commonly associated with conditions such as a जांच, spinal stenosis, degenerative changes in the spine, or spondylolisthesis.

People with Sciatica may experience symptoms that extend from the lower back or buttock into the leg, sometimes reaching the foot.

Types of Sciatica

Sciatica can present in different forms:

Acute Sciatica

- Symptoms develop suddenly
- Often associated with a recent injury or disc irritation

Chronic Sciatica

- Symptoms persist for several weeks or longer
- May be associated with ongoing nerve compression

Alternating Sciatica

- Symptoms may affect different sides at different times
- Can be associated with changes in the lower spine

Bilateral Sciatica

- Symptoms occur in both legs
- May indicate more significant spinal nerve involvement

Early assessment and appropriate management can help prevent persistent symptoms and functional limitations.

Common Causes of Sciatica

Sciatica can result from several conditions affecting the lumbar spine and surrounding structures.

01

हर्निएटेड डिस्क

– Disc material presses against a spinal nerve
– May cause radiating leg pain

02

स्पाइनल स्टेनोसिस

– Symptoms may worsen with prolonged standing or walking

03

Degenerative Changes

– Age-related changes in spinal discs and joints

04

Spinal Injury or Structural Changes

– Changes in रीढ़ की हड्डी that may irritate nerve roots

लक्षण: संकेतों को पहचानना

Symptoms may develop suddenly or gradually depending on the underlying cause.

दर्द लक्षण

- Sharp or burning pain in the lower back
- Pain extending into the buttock
- Radiating pain down the leg

संवेदी लक्षण

- Tingling or pins-and-needles sensations
- Numbness in the leg or foot
- Increased sensitivity in some areas

Movement & Functional Symptoms

- Difficulty walking or standing
- Reduced lower-limb movement
- Difficulty sitting for prolonged periods

संभावित जटिलताओं

If Sciatica is not appropriately managed, it may lead to:

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

01

Can Sciatica heal without surgery?

Yes. Many cases of Sciatica improve with conservative treatment such as maintaining appropriate activity, physiotherapy, exercise, and medical management. Surgery is generally considered when symptoms are severe, persistent, or associated with significant nerve dysfunction.

02

Is walking good for Sciatica?

For many people, gentle walking can help maintain mobility and prevent prolonged inactivity. The amount and intensity should be adjusted according to symptoms and individual tolerance.

03

How long does Sciatica take to improve?

Recovery varies depending on the underlying cause and severity. Many acute cases improve over several weeks, while persistent or recurrent symptoms may require a longer rehabilitation program.

04

Can physiotherapy help with Sciatica?

Yes. Physiotherapy can help reduce pain, improve mobility and strength, restore functional movement, and teach strategies to manage symptoms and reduce recurrence.
